An artificial island on the Vistula Lagoon
The island is located on the Vistula Lagoon, approximately 4.5 kilometres from the shipping canal through the Vistula Spit, near Przebrno. The island has the shape of an ellipse.
The Aestian Island, with dimensions of 1,906 by 1,166 meters, a circumference of 4.9 kilometres and an area of 180 hectares, is one of the largest islands of this type in Poland. Only the area of the steel sheet pilings used to give it its shape and maintain the sand backfill obtained from dredging the bottom of the fairway is almost 112.5 thousand m2 – for comparison, they would cover almost 16 full-size football fields.
One million tons of sand were used to fill the dike, for which approximately 37,000 trucks would be needed. In addition, approximately 140,000 tons of were used for its construction. tons of hydrotechnical stone, which would fill 3.5 thousand railway wagons.
The island has already survived winters with ice drift, which proved that the selected structure and designed cross-sections served their purpose and it can be safely used for years to come.
The investor chose the location of the artificial island based primarily on natural considerations. It is a haven of peace for birds that use this area.
