Extension of DK 22 – laying of the wearing course soon

The alteration of the section of National Road No. 22 is entering its decisive phase, which involves laying the wearing course of the surface. Intensive works are underway at the construction site, including demolition and discipline-related works, but also, among others, strengthening of the subsoil.

The extension of the 10-kilometre section of National Road No. 22, from Królewo Malborskie to the border of the Pomorskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeships, began in the fall of 2022. The scope of works includes strengthening of the subsoil, alteration of structural layers of the road surface, construction of culverts and discipline-related works.

All surfaces from the border of Malbork to Królewo have already been completed: – We completely reinforced the subbase with a mattress, we also completed all the surface layers up to the binding layer and most of the paving works – says Mateusz Śniczewski, Road Works Manager from the NDI Group.

Currently, paving and finishing works are being carried out at the construction site for laying the wearing course on the main section. The wearing course on the bicycle path will be made of a mineral-asphalt mixture. A concrete surface in the Road Transport Inspection bay is still to be completed, which will be used by the Road Transport Inspection and police officers who check whether truck drivers comply with restrictions on transit traffic.

– So far, the biggest challenge in this investment project was to carry out works under an alternating traffic scheme, i.e. maintaining traffic and road passability and at the same time continuing construction works – adds Mateusz Śniczewski.

At the end of June, intensive work on individual sections began.

– We are carrying out demolition works on section no. 9, and we will also start earthworks soon. The construction of a load-bearing embankment is underway on section No. 10, demolition work is underway on section No. 13, where earthworks and industrial works will begin threafter – explains Paweł Miliński, Road Works Manager from the NDI Group.

In addition, works related to strengthening of the soil using drainage columns are carried out. A geosynthetic mattress is also laid to strengthen the subsoil along this section.

NDI Group companies, as the general contractor, are also responsible for, among others: ensuring proper drainage of the road, but also for the development of greenery, installation of protective barriers and railings, places for rest and recreation along the bicycle path, construction of noise barrier screens and retention and evaporation reservoirs. The alteration works also include crossroads with perpendicular roads as well as culverts, exits and bus bays.

The expansion of DK 22 is carried out taking into account the requirements of environmental protection and sustainable development. The investment project will significantly shorten the travel time and improve the safety of drivers and passengers. The investor is the Gdańsk branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.
