Drainage columns on the DK 22

In the autumn of last year, work began on the extension of the 10-kilometre section from Królewo Malborskie to the border of the Pomeranian and Warmian-Masurian Voivodeships. Work is currently being carried out on six sections with alternating traffic. Work on section 11 to the binder course has recently been completed. Bituminous works are currently being carried out on the site, as well as soil reinforcement using modern methods. The extension will improve the quality of travel and, above all, safety.

The investor is the Gdańsk branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. The general contractor, NDI Group, has 19 months to complete the work, excluding winter periods. The new surface will reduce travel time and improve safety for drivers and passengers. The scope of the reconstruction includes soil reinforcement, reconstruction of the road surface structural layers, culverts construction and industry works. The widening of the DK 22 will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of environmental protection and sustainable development.

At present, the road works including the binder course have been completed at sections 3 and 8. Traffic has resumed on both sides of the carriageway. At sections points 9, 11 and 18, the team has completed 35,000 linear metres of drainage columns and around 40,000 m3 of load-bearing embankments for soil reinforcement.

“We are constructing the drainage columns using the sand injection method, which consists of adding grains to the subsoil at specific points in order to improve the parameters of the native soil,” says Wojciech Deputat, site manager from the NDI Group. “On selected sections, we have removed the road surface and made bases of cement-stabilised aggregate and mechanically stabilised crushed-stone aggregate. In the near future, we plan to move on to the next sections and start road construction. Immediately after the demolition of the load-bearing embankment, we will continue with the road works on the next sections. And we will continue with bituminous works,” adds Wojciech Deputat.

The planned completion date for the extension of national road no. 22 is November 2024. The reconstructed road will then be widened. In parallel, a cycle path will be built along the entire length of the project and new pavements will be laid. The reconstruction also includes intersections with crossroads, culverts, exits, and bus bays. As general contractor, NDI Group is also responsible for ensuring proper drainage of the road, as well as landscaping, installation of guardrails and balustrades, a rest and recreation area along the cycle path, construction of noise barriers and retention and evaporation reservoirs. The cost of this investment is over PLN 175.6 million.
