Construction site on the Spit handed over to the Contractor

Pursuant to the contract, the Investor, the Maritime Office in Gdynia, on Friday, October 18, handed over to the Contractor – a consortium of N.V. Besix SA, NDI S.A. and NDI Sp.z o.o. – the area where works will be carried out as a part of the first stage of construction of a waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gulf of Gdańsk. The contractor is currently working on a schedule of construction works and contract documents required before work commences. The work area will be secured, while preserving the continuity of road traffic. We will keep you informed about any changes.

During the signing of the contract for the implementation of the investment, which took place two weeks ago in Elbląg, kpt. ż.w. Wiesław Piotrzkowski (master mariner), Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia said: ‘After handing over the construction site, the contractor will implement the objectives that have been outlined, i.e. the construction of abutments and quays from the side of the Vistula Lagoon and from the side of the Gulf of Gdańsk in such a way that the material and various types of structures that are needed to implement the project are transported by water, thus limiting the burden on residents and meeting their expectations. This is a priority for us and the contractor. (…) Environmental protection is another priority for us but also a difficulty that needs to be overcome. We have restrictions on the time of day for performing certain hydraulic engineering and dredging works as well as on the time of year…’

The Contractor’s representative, Nic De Roeck, Regional Director – Europe, BESIX assured that ‘We are determined to complete this project while maintaining the highest quality standards, respecting the health of employees and paying attention to environmental aspects.’

Ms Winiarek-Gajewska, President of the Management Board of NDI S.A., said ‘This is an interesting investment and its implementation will be yet another project in the hydraulic engineering industry that NDI can implement with Besix. As a part of this partnership, we have already built the DCT2 container terminal at the Port of Gdańsk and the cooperation was very good. We will now translate this experience into the investment on the Vistula Spit.’

“Construction of the waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gulf of Gdańsk, Part I” includes the following tasks:
– construction of Protective Harbour from the side of the Gulf of Gdańsk,
– construction of a shipping channel with a lock and construction of closures together with waiting stations from the side of the Gulf of Gdańsk and the Vistula Lagoon as well as navigation markings, technical buildings (together with systems), parking lots, a view point, a new road system with two movable steel bridges rotating around a vertical axis, which will allow passage over the channel in front of the lock and behind the lock, power and teletechnical networks, water supply and sewage networks, underground water intakes,
– construction of an artificial island located in the Vistula Lagoon
Time to complete: – 32 months
As a part of the entire investment, the following are planned: the above-mentioned tasks under Part I and the construction of a waterway in the Vistula Lagoon, reconstruction of the existing waterway on the Elbląg River, construction of a swing bridge over the Elbląg River in Nowakowo, along with changes to the road system and power and teletechnical networks, installation works (drainage, water supply and sewage systems).
The investment is located within two voivodeships – Pomeranian Voivodeship and Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. The following elements of the project are located within the borders of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, in the Sztutowo commune: the construction of a shipping channel through the Vistula Spit, the construction of a waterway in the northern part of the Vistula Lagoon (the border of the voivodeships passes through the centre of the Vistula Lagoon) and the construction of an artificial island (also within the Krynica Morska commune). Within the borders of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, the southern part of the waterway in the Vistula Lagoon is located in the commune of Tolkmicko, and the waterway on the Elbląg River with adjacent land areas, located within the Elbląg commune and the city of Elbląg.
The announcement of the tender for Part II is scheduled until the end of this year. The procedure will concern works on the Elbląg River, involving the construction of embankments and dredging works as well as the construction of a swing bridge in Nowakowo. The last procedure for dredging works (part III) in the Vistula Lagoon is initially planned to be announced in 1.5 – 2 years.
