The SARP award for the centre in Olsztyn was granted in the Public Space category. NDI S.A. was the General Contractor of “Area A” – the City Beach and „Area D” – the Canoeing Base.
The competition was under the Honorary Patronage of Prof. Piotr Gliński, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the Honorary Patronage of Mr. Andrzej Adamczyk, Minister of Infrastructure and Construction.
The Jury’s rationale:
Ukiel, the Recreation and Sports Centre in Olsztyn is a well programmed, designed and completed project of multi-level development of the lake waterside with bathing areas, a marina, boat hangars, sports equipment rental shops, playgrounds, bridges and a pier, restaurants, a spa, conference-rooms. The architecture of the buildings is well matched to the lake waterside, forming a value added to the natural qualities of the landscape. There are terraces arranged on the roofs with partial green areas, the glass sliding walls open the view on the lake. The structures have been linked with timber bridges for pedestrians and cyclists, creating a few kilometer long walking and recreational trail. The development of the space shows respect to natural landscape protection, subordinating the architecture to this priority. The whole project is a good sample of public space and landscape development integrating the city with the lake.
In the previous edition of the SARP competition the Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre was awarded the title of the best architectural structure erected from public funds in 2014.
