Intensive works on the construction of the city stadium in Katowice
The construction of the city stadium in Katowice is in full swing. The work progress is 75%. The facility is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. Then, GKS Katowice will need to obtain a license allowing it to play at the new facility.
– Nowa Bukowa – this will be the name of the street where the facility is being built. In this way, we will refer to the history of GKS Katowice, which has existed for 60 years and now plays at the facility located at Bukowa Street. In the fall, I will apply to the City Council to give the street such a name – said Marcin Krupa, mayor of Katowice, during a press briefing. – We are at the last stage of construction works. The structure of the facility has already been enclosed and finishing works are under way. The object is taking on a realistic shape. The construction works will be completed in the fall, and then technical acceptance procedures will take place, so that in the spring GKS Katowice will be able to play its Ekstraklasa matches here, added the mayor.
Currently, work is being carried out on all jobsites at the City Stadium in Katowice. On the main turf, drainage works have been completed, along with the foundation for the greenery layers, and turf drainage is being carried out on the training pitches. A binding layer of bituminous road surface was laid in the parking lots separating the training pitches from the stadium, as well as on the road around the stadium. The construction of foundation layers in the parking lots next to the sports hall and in the
area of the media vehicles yard is also in progress. Intensive work is under way on the promenade around the facility, the foundations are being successively covered with a concrete surface, and green areas are being developed in other areas. The installation of the roofing was completed, along with the installation of the trough and drainage of the stadium roof over the three stands, the installation of the structure for the telescreens, and the installation of cable routes. Preparatory work has started for the installation of fences, balustrades and seats. Infrastructure for fans under the stands is also being built – catering boxes and sanitary rooms.
Work progress is also visible in the hall. Advanced finishing works are under way in the building, including drywall installation, plastering and painting works. Sanitary rooms are being equipped with concealed systems, the boiler room is being equipped, the booster pump and fire systems are being equipped, and pressure tests are being carried out on the completed systems. The erection of the ventilation system for the entertainment and sports hall has been already completed. Also, glass façades were made for the sky boxes of the VIP zone, the sports event service rooms, and the entrance lobby of the hall. Work is being carried out in the electrical and telecommunications parts of the project.
– The city stadium is another sports facility that we are implementing on behalf of our city as a substitute investor. At the end of 2022, we commissioned a sports complex at Asnyka street. It is extremely popular and eagerly visited by local residents. I am convinced that this will also be the case with this stadium. We are about to complete the investment project, and the works are progressing according to schedule – says Andrzej Hołda, president of the management board of Katowickie Inwestycje S.A.
A new city stadium is being built at Bocheńskiego and Upadowa streets in Katowice. The general contractor of the investment project is the Sopot-based company NDI. The task includes the construction of a stadium with stands for 15,000 fans, an entertainment and sports hall with a capacity of nearly 3,000 spectators, a main square, two full-size training fields, as well as a parking lot with approximately 500 parking spaces (including spaces for vehicles of disabled people and 11 coaches). NDI is also responsible for the development of the area around the stadium and the construction of roads, sidewalks and bicycle routes.
– The facility is in the final stage of construction. We have three months left to complete the basic works and we are implementing them according to schedule. Work on covering the stadium’s roof structure will last until June 20, and we are starting to lay the turf on the main pitch, and seats are also being installed both in the stadium and in the hall. Then we will have to complete finishing works in the hall, including lighting and laying of a sports floor – says Wojciech Pałczyński, director of NDI S.A. South Branch
The new stadium is a single-story building with large structures under the auditorium. The auditorium consists of four inclined stands, connected by slanted corners. Below them there will be four corner vomitories (gates), which will allow cars to access the pitch and ensure ventilation of the pitch – equipped with drainage, irrigation and heating systems. The southern, eastern and northern stands are built of 21 raised rows, and the western stand – of 20. The entire sports complex is surrounded by a roofed colonnade of pillars measuring 50×50 cm, on which the steel roof structure rests.
The Stadion Miejski Katowice Company On January 23 this year, the company Stadion Miejski Katowice sp. z o.o. was established. Establishing it at this stage of the investment project is important because its tasks include, among others: ongoing cooperation with the contractor of construction works, as well as preparation of the selection procedure based on public procurement law of the title sponsor for the city stadium in Katowice. Once the facility is opened to the public, the newly established company will not only manage the sports facility as real estate, but also ensure its use for the benefit of residents.
– We assume that the facility will be used not only for sports purposes, but also for social, cultural purposes and those related to the promotion of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle – says Paweł Cebula, president of Stadion Miejski Katowice Sp. z o.o – In the near future, the company’s task will be primarily to supervise the final stage of the investment project in terms of the most optimal preparation of the facility for professional and public users. It is important that from the first day of operation, the sports complex fully meets all needs, both in terms of sports and organization – adds the president. Paweł Cebula is a graduate of the Silesian University of Technology. His professional life so far was related to Śląskie Wesołe Miasteczko, where he started working in 2011. From 2015, he was a Member of the Management Board and Managing Director of the oldest amusement park in Poland located on the border of Katowice and Chorzów – Legendia Śląskie Wesołe Miasteczko.
100% of the shares in the new company are owned by the city company Katowickie Inwestycje S.A., which, on behalf of the city, is responsible for supervising the construction of the sports complex. In addition, the company is a substitute investor in such projects as: the construction of MDK Witosa, the construction of the Katowice Music Education Center – Dom Kilara and the gaming and technology hub in Nikiszowiec. The construction of the stadium, sports hall, two training fields, parking spaces and the necessary road infrastructure will be completed in the second half of 2024.
