Important investment at PGZ Naval Shipyard in Gdynia

PGZ Naval Shipyard in Gdynia will soon have a new hull hall, the tallest in the Polish shipbuilding sector and one of the tallest in Europe, as well as a modern production hall. The quay and storage yards will be expanded. New internal roads will also be created. Today, on 10 March 2023, at the premises of the PGZ Naval Shipyard, the investor and the general contractor, the Consortium consisting of NDI S.A., NDI SOPOT S.A. and Pekabex BET, signed a contract to carry out this task.

The project includes the construction of new facilities, as well as the reconstruction of already existing infrastructure. As the investor emphasises, this project is necessary for the implementation of the “MIECZNIK” Programme and will significantly increase the production capacity of the PGZ Naval Shipyard.

“Today’s signing of the contract marks the end of a very busy stage of analysing, designing, obtaining permits and selecting the best solutions and partners for the realisation of the project. Now we are moving full steam ahead with construction. If we do not encounter unexpected circumstances, as early as mid-2024 we will have the infrastructure, machinery and equipment that will make PGZ Naval Shipyard the most modern shipyard in Poland, said Paweł Lulewicz, President of PGZ Naval Shipyard. “Thanks to these investments, we will build three Miecznik-type frigates, which will be the most modern units of our Navy. We will also use our new, expanded capacity to build and modernise other vessels in the future.”

The general contractor has 67 weeks from the date of signing the contract to complete all works. The works will be completed in June 2024.

“I am delighted that we can take on such an important task. We have extensive experience in both building and hydraulic engineering projects. Recently, we have worked, among others, on the Vistula Spit, in ports in Szczecin, Gdańsk and Gdynia; we have also commenced a large project at the Orlen quay. I am convinced that the experience we have gained so far will result in the smooth realisation of this task as well. I hope that in a little over a year we will meet in a completely changed, modern space,” says Szymon Reptowski, Vice-President and CFO of the NDI Group.

The most important task of this project is the construction of a new hall in which hulls of the three ultra-modern frigates for the Polish Navy being built as part of the “Miecznik” Programme will be integrated. According to the project, the development area will be close to 6,000 m2. The height of the hall – 43 m (and even 46 m including the ventilation system mounted on the roof) – will make it the tallest hall in the Polish shipbuilding sector and one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

Furthermore, a production hall will be built to house all of the shipyard’s equipment departments (building area of almost 5,000 m2). The consortium is also responsible for the expansion and reconstruction of the quay, storage yards and internal roads, together with the modernisation of the technical infrastructure at the PGZ Naval Shipyard.
