Construction of an artificial island in the Vistula Lagoon
In September 2022, we commissioned the first stage of the project of waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gulf of Gdańsk, commonly referred to as the Vistula Spit Canal.
Part of this project was the construction of an artificial island, which is today known as Aestian Island.
The island is located in the Vistula Lagoon about 4.5 kilometres from the shipping canal through the Vistula Spit, at the level of Przebrno. The island is the shape of an ellipse. Its circumference is nearly 5 km. For now, it is almost empty inside. It will be filled with material excavated from the dredged waterways in the Vistula Lagoon and the Elbląg River.
The investor chose the location of the artificial island based primarily on environmental reasons. It is intended to provide a sanctuary for birds using the area.
The engineers in charge of the creation of the island talk about the challenges that such an unusual project involved.
